How to engage a whole town to create an engaging strategy and promote renewable energy?

Hagedorn Village, Steinheim, Germany

Why?

Hagedorn is a small village in the province of Steinheim with 38 houses and 103 inhabitants. According to its climate protection plan, the city aims to achieve efficient energy use, a higher integration of renewables and more interest in energy by consumers. But, how to engage citizens in energy measures?

What?

Hagedorn is connected to the medium-voltage grid and supplied by two local network stations. Through the pilot, the low-voltage infrastructure of the village will be improved and expanded to include advanced measurement and electrical storage. By managing the storage in the village, the entire town will be able to use a larger share of locally self-produced solar power. This will stabilize the microgrid and support the medium-voltage grid.

How?

As part of the citizen engagement plan, a social group is established to regularly discuss the use of renewables energies in a self-organised way. A series of information events are conducted as part of this long term engagement process.

What for?

Increase share of self-produced solar power.

Improve resilience and flexibility.

Increase citizens’ active participation in energy programmes.
